What is the best way to carry extra propane tank?

I want to carry one for BBQ. I will keep the extra one in the back of my truck. Is it SAFE? Should I put into some kind of case?

We went with dual LP on Astro (tongue installation).
The setup didn't include a switch or anything, so the extra tank could used for back-up, or other LP needs.

I have a 10-pound tank that I bring along for the BBQ and as a backup for the r-pod.  I carry it in a milk carton in the back of the Tribute.

We carry ours on the tongue as a back-up or for the grill.

For our backup propane we use a 4.25 lb propane tank like this one http://www.lowes.com/pd_313493-743-281149_4294857755+4294829321_4294937087?productId=3089591&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Propane%2BTank_4294857755 4294829321_4294937087_?cm_mmc=search_google-_-Seasonal%20Grills-_-Grill%20Propane%20Tanks-_-propane%20tanks
It fits in the pass through in the back of our 176 and keeps the extra weight of a second tank off of the tongue.  We figure that it has enough capacity to cover us until we have time to refill the primary tank.

I carry an extra propane tank in the back of my pickup in a plastic milk crate.
