my low point drain on my 172  has caps that screw onto each  drain tube

anyone ever just add a  fitting  that has a turn knobb to open and close the drain?
rather than unscrewing and screwing the caps on and off?

thanks

I've added taps to my low point drains.  Its a quick and easy mod.

When I winterized last weekend, I couldn't figure out how to open the low point drains, the whole thing seemed to be turning, plus the only way I could get it to turn was to use pliers, so I just made sure I used lots of RV antifreeze.  Is their a trick to these drains that I can't figure out (while upside down trying to see them with bi-focals?) You'll need two wrenches (or two pairs of channel locks).  As you've seen, the caps are hex-shaped.  But the pipes also have a hex fitting on them.

Eh?  Under it?  My low point drains are about a foot off the ground.  They're fairly easy to work on - I just sat down on the pavement beside the trailer and went to work.  I take it that things are different on your 172?

The fittings on my 171 are 1/2".  I simply unscrewed a cap and measured the diameter.  A quick trip to the plumbing aisle at Lowes and I found some acceptable shut off valves.

You'll probably do best with two pairs of channel locks to tighten the caps.  Whatever you do, don't try tightening the cap alone as you'll twist the pipe and may break something.

on my 172 the drain is under the trailer right  above  and next to the axel
its hard for me to crawl under it and work on it

are yours  at a different location?

there is  a hex nut on the tube and  then there is the cap

so you have to hold the  first  nut  with one  plier and then tighten the cap with the other?
as you can see I am not  a very good mechanic   Ha!

Ah... my low point drains are rear of the axle, just clear of the tire, so its quite easy.

Thats right!
