Friends of ours were campground hosts in Shoshone last summer in Wyoming. The bear that killed the tent camper was very near them. They had a pop up and the park service moved them and ALL of the tenters out for 3 weeks. They have gone back this week, for the summer, in a hardsided RV. No more tents for them.

Many of the national parks allow tents. They are more concerned about food storage. Food cannot be stored in a car or tent but must be locked in the bear proof storage provided. I watched them tow a car away last summer because of food in the car and they couldn't find the owner.(Yosemite) With a trailor/rv food is allowed to be stored inside but no icechest outside of the rv.

We have a 173T and enjoy it because of the openess of having the canvas pop out bed, and yes it does make the camper feel larger than it is. I've always assumed that if we went to the Smokies or somewhere where I had a concern for bears, we could leave the back end closed up and sleep on the bed that is normally our dining area. Plus, there's still room for one more on the fold out sofa in the rear. Hope this helps...

If a bear smells food, it's going to break in even if you have a million dollar motorhome. As long as you keep all your food, as well as anyhting that may give off a scent ( even toothpaste!) in the bear locker provided at the campsite, you can camp in just about anything. I heard there is one campsite in Yellowstone that only allows hard-sided RV's, but that's about it.
