We had originally wanted a 172 for occasional camping with our sons, but wondered if the bunks would be too stuffy with no windows. So we got a 171 and I went to work making a 2nd bunk. Originally I wanted to put it over the dinette bed but realized that would be tight quarters for the lower occupant. Instead, I constructed a quick assembly/disassembly, stowable platform over the counter and foot of the dinette bed. It's a little inconvenient, but a solution for those occasions when an extra bed is needed. I'm looking into having a foam mattress made.
We also quickly found that a mattress topper is a must for the queen bed, since it feels like lying directly on the springs. Otherwise, we're very pleased with our new 171.

Hope whoever sleeps up there doesn't turn on the water :) That looks like great work. Nice job.

Yes, the water got turned on many times during construction, even after draining the tank. I'm thinking of putting a hook into the wall behind the faucet so I can bungee the handles closed!
