We recently stayed at Fort DeSoto campground in Tierra Verde FL (by St Petersburg).  It's a county park with lots of campsites where you can dock your boat, and others where you can put in a kayak or canoe.  There are rentals for kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.  There are lots of coves where you can explore with your kayak, and access to the bay.  Gorgeous views everywhere.  They have one spot of the campground for pets, another for tent camping, and another for trailers and RVs without pets.  They also have a small store at the campground.  Fort DeSoto Park is around the corner from the campground with beaches, picnic areas, an old fort, and a small museum.  It also has a 7 mile bike path, very wide, which can accomodate bicyclers, runners, and walkers.  We didn't use the bath houses, even though they looked decent...I just like my own bathroom.  But after 2.5 days of 2 showers a day for 2 people (still sweaty weather), our greywater tank got full.  I think next time I'll have to break down and use the bath house.

Fort De Soto is heaven on earth. I moved to Florida because of it. Its gorgeous white sand and beautiful blue green waters.

The temp depends on when you go. Most Floridians do not go in the water till its around 80 degrees. This is usually around end of May. If you were to go to the beach This weekend you may see some people in the water but I would bet money they are Canadian tourist.

Sounds like an awesome place.

On a side note:
If you often find yourself in a primitive site with a dump nearby, then you might want to invest in a tote. We use our tote for those places mentioned. I just fill the fresh water [with jugs] on a daily basis and empty the gray [into the tote] daily as well. That way, we can enjoy our in-suite facilty instead of utilizing bath houses.

Strong recommendation for Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort on the beach south of St. Augustine. We've been going there for 20 years.

Stayed at Coral Sands on the beach near Daytona Beach a couple of weeks ago. Won't go back to that one.

If you can get into Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, FL it is really nice.  Not big fans of Bryn Mawr myself...sites are very close with little privacy, but easy walk to the beach.
