    Posted: 17 May 2013 at 11:31am
Hi everyone- I have a 2011 177 with the roof A/C. I think it is the 13,500 BTU model, although our 2009 r-pod had a 11K BTU roof A/C, I beleive. Anyway, I have the small Honda 2000 watt generator. I think I read something somewhere on the forum that the r-pod roof A/C can be adapted via a part to allow me to use just the 1 2000 watt generator. I guess the surging as it starts, etc., is to much for the 2000 watt generator on its own. Can anyone tell me if the r-pod roof A/C can be modified some how to allow the 1 2000 watt generator to power it, and how? Many thanks.

It may or may not work but you can install a hard start capacitor on the roof top unit. See this Link

Sean is correct; it's call a hard start or assist start kit. Which is nothing but another run/start capacitor that can be purchased at any HVAC parts store. Grainger also has these as might some appliance parts store such as Fox Appliances. These connected to the capacitor that is already installed on your RTU(roof top unit). Be sure to take the BTU's and any other info to the store and they will be able to sell you the correct item. Installed one on my 172 two years ago; it works great. Good luck !

Thanks for the great info. Can you tell me what year your r-pod is? Does it have the 11K or 13.5K BTU unit? Is there anyway of knowing what size the 2011 r-pods used? Do you by chance have the part number or name of the capacitor you used?

Thanks- I live in southern, CA. I just bought this 2011 r-pod 177 in FL. We will pick it up next month. I need the generator to run the A/C and hate the thought of lugging around 2 Honda 2K watt units. I can get a Yamaha 2400 watt unit (need the low noise feature) that claims it will run most 13,500 BTU A/C units for about $1350. I'd rather deal with 1 unit- and it doesn't weigh much more than the Honda 2K generator. I've read lots of posts from people who claim that the capacitors don't help with the Honda 2K watt generator and a 13.5 BTU A/C unit. I guess having a small 9K BTU roof A/C installed is also an option. Thoughts?

Mine is a 11,500. As an option, you might want to look at Home Depot, they just started selling a Ryobi 2200 Inverter generator for $ 599.00. It should start and run your a/c without a problem.

The hard start mod costs like, $17. Got our capacitor at a local HVAC shop. Took longer to get the shroud off than to switch the capacitor out. Honda 2000i will start and run my AC. (so will my Generac 2000i)
