I noticed there have been a few people reporting that their black water tank pipe and/or grey water tank pipe became detached from its hanger attachment at the frame and dragged along the road and caused quite a bit of damage.

With this in mind I decided that I would take a close look at the pipe suspension condition on our R177 Hood River RPod.

Although the metal hanger brackets and attaching screws appeared to be holding well the brackets exhibited significant surface corrosion.  They were not plated or painted, just bare metal.  As I had a piece of 1” wide x 16 ga SST strip it was no great effort to make up new hanger brackets for the black and grey water exit pipes.

The disassembly process also revealed that the BW pipe could be raised 1” that would improve underside road clearance and still maintain a good drainage incline.  A further improvement was the introduction of a spacer on the lower pinch bolt to avoid over compression of the pipe and potential bracket damage.

Unfortunately, this happened to me on my way back from the AZ mountains yesterday, not sure how long I drug the pipe, a passing car pointed to my trailer so I pulled over.  (Frankly I was a little relieved it wasn't something worse, like smoking bearings, brakes, loose lug nuts, whatever.)

In my case the brackets look fine (and appear to be SS), but the lock nut came off at some point, the bolt was still in the bracket.  I tied it back up with a boot lace and zip tie to drive the 50 miles to the nearest hardware store, where I bought a longer bolt and lock nut and repaired it.

Fortunately the valve assembly seems OK, the friction only removed the cap and about 2" of pipe on the bottom.  But I will definitely be double-checking the grey water bracket as well.

Before I had a failure, I reinforced my black water bracket.  Too many issues from other members.  Haven't seen much on gray line, but I do monitor.  Forums are good for "heads up" on potential issues, and I appreciate that.  Now an inspection of these brackets are mandatory before I head out, during the trip and on way back to the house.  To date no issues, but RVing is not just pull and go.
