2 Eggs
Cooked Sausage
Chopped Ham
Chopped cooked Bacon
Shredded Cheeses
Chopped Onion
Chopped Green Pepper
Chopped Tomato
Chopped Mushroom
Salsa
Zip Lock Freezer Bag - needs to be heavy duty - Generics don't hold up very well.
Have each guest write his or her name with permanent marker on a quart size plastic ziping freezer bag.. Place 2 eggs in bag - squeeze and shake to scramble. Add other ingredients as desired. Press the air out of bag and zip it up. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil - place up to 6 or 8 bags at a time in a pot. Use a large pot so freezer bags float freely and don't touch sides of pot. Boil bags for 13 - 15 minutes. When done, open bags and omelets will roll out easily. Make as many as needed. and use any ingredients that you like. With a large crown, different families can bring an ingredient to help. Its fun with a group.

GREAT idea...and healthier than fried! I can't wait to try it- and it does sound like fun to do for a group.

We made them at a family camping trip in July. Everyone loved it and decided to make it a yearly tradition. We had everyone hold their bag while I cracked the eggs and dropped them in. They added the ingredients that they liked and they were responsible for timing their own omelet. We made the mistake of buying generic $1.00 freezer bags and found out they were not heavy enough to hold together. It still worked, but we decided to buy better bags next year. It was lots of fun. |

Its generally not a good idea be using ziploc bags for boiling food. The Ziploc company came out with a release a while back about how their bags are not designed to be boiled in, and can potentially release chemicals into your food. I'm trying to find the article online, as it was in an RV magazine after they published the ziploc omlette in a prior issue.
Did find this article, but its not the one I remember reading:

I agree with you gmandual. Those ziploc bags are not safe for boiling. It would have been fun but without proper bags, no thanks. I posted this elsewhere but wanted to remind folks not to do this. Or, do it at your own risk! |

The omelet in a bag is such a great idea. Every body can mach their own and the only mess in the pot the water was boiled in. I found this site on the internet. They say the bags are boilable and reusable. Think I will buy some and try the Boil in a Bag Omelet. Looks like they would be usefull around the camper for many things. Check it out. http://store.zip-vac.com/prod-Gallon_Bag-4.aspx

I bought the quart size ZipVac bags and made omelets on our outing this weekend. Worked great...definitely a "do again" for us.

I was just reading this and didn't realize ZipLocks shouldn't be boiled. Since we try to camp "green" whenever possible I think we'll just have to stick with scrambled in a well seasoned cast-iron. As far as I know egg shells and cast-iron are still safe to use.
It does sound like a neat idea though. |
