Can a Sorento LX, 3.8L, tow a r-pod?

From what I can see the 3.8L Sorento has a tow rating of 5000 lbs so you should be fine towing an r-pod with one.  Should probably double-check that with your owner's manual just to be on the safe side though.

I guess I'm a little confused(nothing new).  I checked the edmonds book for 2006 kia sorento and it only listed a 3.5L and not a 3.8L and the towing capacity was listed as 3500lb which would be borderline for towing an r-pod. But then I don't personally know about the Sorento and don't know the engine options availabe in 2006.  The 2009 3.8 L was listed as 5000 lb towing so go figure.

you are correct. My manual says I can tow 3500# but my KIA says I can tow 5000#. My manual shows my motor is 3.5L but Kia dealer says it is 5000#. I am lost? I want to tow at least 3200#. Thanks. Judy

Wish I could help but you know more than I do about Kia's since I don't own one and have never even driven one.  If it is possible, find the Official Kia web site and see what they say.  Or contact the national headquarters and see what they say.

In your title you specificed its a 2006?  Is that correct year or is it a typo?

I show that in 2006 the LX sorento was only available with a 3.5L engine and was rated with a tow capacity of 3500lbs and 192Hp at 5500RPM and 212ft-lb of torque at 3000rpm.  I don't see a 3.8 engine being available untill 2007.   The 2007 is rated at a 5000lb towing capacity and 262HP at 6000rpm and 260ft-lbs of torque at 4500rpm.   From the looks of things I would think that the 2006 would have enough tow capacity but might be a bit underpowered.    If its a 2007, then it shouldn't be a problem as the 3.8L that was available in the 2007 models should move the rpod along nicely.

My 09 Hyundai Santa Fe has the same tow capacity(3500lb) and at 260hp 3.5 the Hyundai has a hard time on even the slightest up hill grades it gets bogged down on long grades to the point that I cant get passed 80kmh
I cant see 192hp doing very well except on level flat roads

Horsepower ratings are not the same for all vehicles. What I am trying to say is that I have a Jeep Liberty 4 cyl. with about the same  hp. and tourque as butterfly lees nissan. I was able to reach a top speed of only about 55 mph. That is on flat ground and no wind. So hp. and torque ratings even if they are the same does not mean they have the same power with different engines. I think there is more to the power of a engine other than hp. and torque. They are a good guide but I do not think they are  exact in gauging power. I am sure there are people on this site than would know better than I, would like to know their thoughts.       David

The towing capacity of a vehicle depends on more than the HP and maximum torque of the engine.  I own a 2003 Ford F150 and the towing capacity of a 2003 F150 can vary from 7000 lbs to 8,800 lbs between trucks with the same engine haveing 260 HP@4500 RPM and 350 lb-ft of torque@ 2500 RPM.  That difference is based on transmission type, cab structure, rear end ratio and whether 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.  I also have 260 HP@4500RPM , the same as the 3.5 L Hyundai above and my vehicle is rated for 7300 lb towing capacity.
