We bought our 171 last year and used it 4or5 times. We never bothered with the hot water, electric or gas. After reading all these post about the little black switch to turn your hot water heater on to electric, I thought i would go take a look at mine. I opened the oustide door and found that the switch has been on all the time!!! I guess now my element is burned up also.Confused Jim

There are a few possibilities here:

It is burnt up. (for obvious reasons)
It may have tripped off. (there is a procedure for resetting)
It may have tripped off and its burnt up. (worse case scenerio)

Removing the element for a visual would be recommended.
Testing it may indicate operation or failure.

I'm not sure what a faulty one looks like.

If the switch was "ON" when you took delivery, and the element is burned out, I think you have a legitimate claim against the dealer that sold it to you. The dealer should not have delivered it with the switch in the "ON" position. I'd ask the dealer for a new electric element - if your is burned out.

The hot water heater comes from the factory with a small 'clevis' pin which is inserted into the on/off switch to prevent an accidental burnout.  If your unit came with the electric switch in the 'on' position, either the factory forgot to insert the pin or your dealer must have removed the pin.  Another factor to convince your dealer that they should cover the cost.

Yes , the little pin was laying in the bottom of the hot water heater compartment.
