One of the things that first attracted us to the pods was the dome. We had been tent campers and really liked the idea of an attached screen room on some of the tents.
But when we tried to use it, I hated it for two reasons: 1) We had a tendency to think of it as a room and failed to close the pod door which in turn caused the dog to escape; and 2) The dome blocked our vision out of the windows on one side. We were ready to give it away! Then last year we happened upon Pepperpod and Coach and noticed that they had removed the front of their dome, making it more like an awning. We tried it and have been loving it ever since.

I camped when it was relatively cold back in October so heated the dome and sat around with friends with a glass of wine. Plenty of space to socialize when it was too cold to be outside. I agree on the view though. On my list of things to do is to get some clear plastic and see if I can put some velcro on it in the same place the flaps drop down now so I can see out of the dome. And I've long wished for and recently saw a Coleman tent that had it: a "door" into and out of tents/dome rooms rather than having to zip to/from the ground each time

We have used ours both in awning mode and in room mode.. depends on the weather a lot.
We like early and late season camping, you can often have whole sections of a campground to yourself then.. And for us, that is when the dome really shines. We set a "milkhouse" heater out there and it's perfect. We often are with one or two ther couples. and you have tons of room to sit and relax, maybe have a taste or two of Kentucky's finest.. I really like the idea of making some plastic windows.. will be looking forward to a report.. |

On one of the really cold nights, I used a very small sort of reflector heater that screws onto a propane canister since I have a small electric heater going in the Pod and two would probably kick off the fuse. I had never heard the term milkhouse heater so had to look that up; new term for me! And Kentucky's finest is exactly what you need when the weather turns cold!

The shock corded aluminum pole on the front of the dome failed during my second use, sending the broken pole through the roof, creating a lovely 2 foot tear. I discarded it. I have camped with other pods who do use their domes and love them. It can be nice to have the shade!

I have always noticed that I usually turn to the mellow, brown stuff as the weather chills but I'm with you that a favorite drink is a favorite drink anytime!
