One more month and our camping season is going to begin. We already made reservations in upstate NY starting Feb 19. We're excited!!!

Very cool, Ken!  I thought that I was pushing the camping season by booking for the Apr. 25-27th weekend.  Where do you recommend in upper NY state in Feb/Mar (assuming that I can shovel a path to our R-Pod?  Surely Fort Drum/Syracuse is still in the midst of winter?

Fort Drum area. They have full hookups right now. North of Syracuse near the lake have another resort designed for snow mobilers and cross country skiing.

We are still covered in snow, but that doesn't stop us.

Agreed.  We are all a hardy bunch.

I figure a trip to the Syracuse Area mid-March would be in order, if only to check out Camping World and stock up for the season ...

... but I have checked out the State Parks and the private campgrounds around Oneida Lake and Fort Drum and none of them seem to open before April 1st.  Obviously I need some more local guidance ... can you provide me with the names of the two campgrounds you would recommend?  Much obliged.

Bud's campground is open all-year. That's right off Drum. Ft. Drum is open all year as well.

I took a road trip to Camping World in Syracuse this past week-end to pick up some supplies for the Spring.

On the way back I drove into Bud's campsite, which is about 15-20 minutes outside Watertown at the Fort Drum intersection.  Seems like a nice spot, Kenn, at the edge of a wooded area.  About 6 full-time RV bungalows were there plus a couple of fifth-wheelers.  Lots of snow.

I also checked out the Cracker Barrel Old Country Restaurants in Syracuse and Watertown for possible overnight stops.  The store in Syracuse has a sheltered parking lot at the back while Watertown's is more open.  I could certainly imagine taking advantage of them on the way back from the Finger Lakes region if the weather turned nasty.

I understand that Camping World also allows overnight stops but, as the Syracuse location is sandwiched between Interstates 90 and 690, it seems fairly isolated.

David, I had a Eurotop short queen mattress shipped to Ogensburg from camping world. Keeping it at home till this spring when I can get to the pod and bring it home. I'll put it in the pod then and hope it's as good as all the folks here say it is. We tried the one from Ikea but didn't find it any better than the orginal pod mattress even with our foam topper. I've been to the camping world at Syracuse, good spot.

In my opinion, you have not made a mistake, but will now be able to enjoy a great nights rest. Enjoy. Safe Travels.

Bud's is pretty cool. Lots of space to run around and enjoy nature. Also, not that far from civilization. Next time you swing on by, check out Sackets Harbor. They have a campsite out there too. Very nice view of the lake.
