Hello,
I need advice on what mattress I should take for camping. I'm not looking for a replacement mattress for my 179. No, I just need something to sleep on outside in case that's what I want, and I don't want to drag my main mattress around. I like this one but it's kinda pricey. Or maybe I should get a simple Intex mattress? It's not like I'm going to use it 24/7. What do you guys think?

Hi, Ben,
First of all, your link is broken. Second of all... Are you kidding? That mattress is one of the most expensive mattresses you could find on Amazon. "Kinda pricey" indeed. I myself use a Thermarest when tent-camping. Mine is not nearly as expensive as the one you seem to like. It is quite comfortable and much less of a hassle than an average blow up mattress. Try to answer this question first: what is it that you can actually afford? That particular mattress is quite expensive, you know. Amazon comes with a search engine, don't ignore it. Second: what do you actually need? Perhaps, you don't like to sleep under the stars at all? This is an RV forum. You don't travel on foot, you can take something heavy with you. There are alternatives to blow up mattresses, you know, two of them, and that's at the very least. You don't need their low weight, so you could easily use a foldable mattress instead, or even a futon, which could come in handy, not just for camping. It's up to you but if I were you I would definitely make up my mind about what I actually want and need.

I think you should use whatever it was you were using before you bought a pod.
If you didn't camp, or sleep outside before the Pod, why do you think you might want to now? (and why is a $400 mattress the answer?) We still tent camp upon occasion, and if "car camping" rather then backpacking, we use these. When backpacking, we use the Thermarest Military. |

Ben,
I replaced our R-Pod 179 mattress with foam cushions (see my modification). So I have the original mattress that is virtually new and available. If you want this one, I can let you have it for $50. +shipping. I can take the two layers of foam out, compress them and pack it all in an apple box including the cover. Shouldn't be too much on shipping. Let me know since I'll be posting it on Craigslist soon. Thanks, John Spokane, WA
