Use it all the time. On our trip last week the GPS didn't recognize the address we had for Itasca State Park so I went to POI, keyed in Itasca State Park and it took us right there. We've had several occasions where the address didn't work but the POI did (Disney World was another one).

In case you didn't know.  With the Garmin and Magellan GPS's you can download points of interest from google maps.

Search for the location you want in google maps.   Then click on the little "red balloon thing" that marks the point on the map.

A white popup box should appear with details about that location.

Select the "more" option
Select "send"
Select "GPS"
Set the type of GPS you have
Put in a phone number and some notes and then click "send"

The process creates a file that downloads to your computer that your GPS client software on your computer understands.  The software then sync's the location into your POI on your GPS.

Of course for this to work you have to have your GPS hooked up to your computer using a GPS cable, and have the software for your gps installed on your PC.   The software for the garmin and magellan units is free.

Wow this was great timing for this discussion.  I just ordered a new GPS for the truck.  The DW wanted the older GPS for her car.  I am getting a Garmin 265WT and giving her the older Street Pilot C550.  I will update the maps on the older unit. Of course, I also ordered her the flip video camera she has been wanting all summer.  She said she wanted it to take videos of her kids at school.  For the life of me I can't figure out why. My Garmin recently tried to take me off a main two lane paved road and put us onto a  barely graveled moutainous West Va road  on a cliff through a wilderness area and we were traveling at night.  Yes, the gravel road was a shorter way to our destination on mileage but would have taken much longer due to the safety issues.  We did end up traveling on it for interest the next day in the daylight without the trailer and that itself was interesting enough.  Time to update the Garmin.  I have found that it doesn't always make the best decisions.    That said, I do like having it when I am in areas that I am not familiar with most of the time.

Sounds like you need to fix the avoidances settings on your garmin.  On almost all garmin units if you go under system settings->navigitation there should be a setting called avoidances.   You can then tell the unit to avoid things such as unpaved roads, toll roads, u-turns, highways, etc.  If you can't find the setting let me know what model you have and can give you some detailed instructions.

Gmandual---Thanks for the  information.  I will have to take a  look at mine.  I did the free software update and that may help with a new road that it didn't recognize too.

Tink--- I do that too.  That is how I knew not to go on that back road.    It still amazes me how I used to travel with just a map in hand.  I had to write down all the turns before I left the house and read them while I traveled (if I was alone).  Probably not the safest way to do it.    At least the garmin means that I don't have to take my eyes off the road if I am alone.    I have heard of someone who followed their GPS without using common sense though and drove past a road closed sign and into a sink hole.    Come on, some people shouldn't drive.

The female voice on my Magellan GPS is a bit demanding and severe.  She's called the Navigatrix Evil Smile
