We've been tossing around the idea of a hard sided tent for years and truth be told I disliked all the humidity and rain while tenting. So off we went to look for a trailer of some sort. When I finally laid eyes on these R-Pods I loved them. They seem so much better made and had all the bells and whistles (except for an outside shower which I guess is a future mod) and now we will be picking ours up next Saturday. Clap

We will be new to RVs and reliving the camping experience we both enjoy. If anyone ever comes up to our area, we will need to meet up.

I'll be keeping my eyes on this forum and have already learned a lot since I signed up yesterday.

Thanks

Welcome Tturbo!

I am from Calgary and picked up my 176 this April.  Just got back from 10 days through Kimberley and then on to Kelowna and back.  It was our 2nd trip out.  The first was to Fairmont Hot Springs in May.  We have a couple more planned in the coming weeks to Radium and Mt. Kidd.  While not planned yet, we will also be doing some trips to Drumheller, Dinosaur Park, etc.

I am really new to towing as well so don't have much advice to offer as yet but you are in the right place for getting some.  Lots of knowledgeable people here including a few other Albertans.

Where are you in Alberta?

Hi Jinhe&Me

We're still getting ready to drive it the few kms home from the dealership on Saturday so it will probably be awhile before we take it too far from home. We may try to see what we can find nearby. Sorry I just added my location in Edmonton (the SE part) so easy to get out of town for parts south and east but west will be a challenge for first timers.

The next one we plan may be for the Drumheller area as it can be really nice there in the summer but taking this to Kelowna area will probably be the first big one as I have family there.

I agree about all the knowledge there is here and so freely given, love the mod suggestions and just plain "need to know" stuff for when we take possession of it.

Nice to meet you and who knows maybe when we get our confidence up and find some time we'll meet up.

Welcome, tturbo!! There is certainly a wealth of information here. Just take advantage of it. And remember, no question is stupid. Nobody will make you feel bad for asking. We"ve all been there.

Welcome Tess & Brad!!  You're going to have a great time with the rpod.  We attract people at the campsites, I think cause it is just a fun  looking camper.  Let us know your travels & some of your fun experiences too.  Hope to seeyas on the road sometime.

Don't be too concerned about trips to the Rocky Mountains.  I found those the easiest part of the towing to date.  I started off with a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe and there was no problem going up or down hills whatsoever.  And that was on my first tow trip (really - who takes their first trip towing into Radium over two mountain passes and 11% grades?! Me, it turns out, and the hills were nothing). Where I really struggled was the highway driving.  I suffered from some serious 'porpoising' and the tow vehicle bucked and bounced all over the highway - namely the Transcanada coming in from Canmore to Calgary.  It was a terrifying experience and I just could not get the hitch setup right and battled endlessly with my RV dealer.  In the midst of trying to get a proper receiver/hitch combo, I stumbled across the Pathfinder and traded the Santa Fe in.  The Pathfinder is a bigger and heavier vehicle and seems to be better on the highway though I still feel the crosswinds (I HATE wind and I seem to be a wind magnet when I tow!).  But my experience with the Santa Fe seemed unique and I think if you are properly outfitted with a WDH (I never was despite paying through the nose for one), you will likely be fine.  With both the Santa Fe and the Pathfinder, I geared down on both descents and ascents.

I am a single mom with an 8-year old and not just a little nervous about this whole towing business.  But it is coming together and if I can do those mountains with ease, anybody can!!

Maybe we can meet up in Drumheller and get some of the other Albertan Podders out as well.

Hi Tess&Brad,

We are just new to R-Pod adventures ourselves, but can speak from some experience.  We just returned from Ohio after purchasing a 171 pod.  R-Pods are great!  We have tented, then used a tent trailer,  and now are in a pod.  We love it.  Big smile

Welcome on board!!  Happy adventures ahead!

Does your R-pod really look like that?

I'm really good at asking stoopid questions, and travel trailers are a whole kettle of fish I'm really not sure of.  So thanks for the welcome and the suggestions we shall certainly ask when we need to.
