Hi!  We are writing from edmonton- and would be very interested in hearing more about your awning plans- we recently got our 177, with the r-dome, but found it is pretty susceptible to winds and were wondering if a custom awning might be a better option.

Hi!

We are about to use our r-dome for the first time next week...we hope it goes well...some people say once you get the hang of it..it only takes 10 minutes to set up..while others say it takes much longer...also I read that if you bring your own stronger tent pegs or nails that this will secure the dome much better..I also read that you need to bring some kind of silicone so it is much easier to thread the dome into the rail...let me know how yours works and I will let you know how it went for us! Cheers! Happy Podding!

Yesterday, I started the project to replace all the screws in the awning rail using the procedures and the proper screws Sandpiper used for this project. I completed replacing all of the screws that still had useable holes but about 10 of the holes were stripped and the new screws couldn't get a "bite". Today I will fill those holes and drill new ones. I truly believe replacing the factory screws with proper screws is the only way to solve the problem of getting the dome onto the rail. We've only tried to put up the dome once but it was *really* difficult and took a long time. I swore I wouldn't even give it a 2nd try until I mounted that rail the way Forest River should have done it in the first place.

Silicone spray makes a big difference in getting the dome into the track.  First use, we found the fabric around one of the grommets has been cut, probably when they put the grommet in- waiting a month now to see if Dometic will honor the warranty...  the grommets and screws on the trailer are really difficult to fit together (and to get off!) we found- we read others' suggestions about using superglue and suction cups, I suspect that is the way we will go.  We also found that with the axle riser the bottom of the tent barely reaches the ground.  With two people, the silicone spray and a small step ladder the setup is not hard though.  There are a couple of good posts on the site about step-by-stepping it.

We had ArrKann do the setup for us before we bought it but of course we didn't see it they just told us they had no issues and we paid for that.

I wish I had more room to try it out before I go anyway, but I'm going to try maybe in a parking lot or something. If it the weather turns lousy when we go we'll really need that extra space.

Silicone spray really helps getting the R dome on.  Pulling it out away from the screws helps.  I put it up by myself in 10 minutes now with a 2 step ladder.  There are some shavings when it comes off but it will take years before enough damage will be done that it would need to be replaced.
