Our first night out after picking up our new 171 told me the mattress was barely acceptable. As luck would have it we had an aero-bed we used to use for excess sleep-over company. It fit perfectly on the bed and now gives us a lovely air mattress to sleep on. Since we have a sleep number bed this feels good. It was easy to bring in un-inflated and easy to inflate once layed out. It should make accessing the winterizing plumbing easier since I can deflate it to do so.

I hear ya on the mattress!  We use our dinette as a permanent bed in our 173.  Since it's not quite a queen (length or width), we got a 2 in. mattress topper and cut it to fit.  I was afraid that an air mattress wouldn't fit.  Otherwise, we would've gotten one, too.

Happy camping!

Hi peachpod. I also do the same thing. Since it is just me, I put my sleeping bag on top of the foam, double it and it is pretty comfy. If I get cold, I just unfold the bag and slip inside. I use the space  under the table for storage. My dog sleeps on the couch. He climbed in bed with me one night and that did not work out very well....................LOL He weights about 70 lbs.

Not many 173's out there. Glad to see another one.

Dittos on the mattress!
We have a 173 and since there is a snoring issure in our pod...I do make up the bed in the dinette EVERY time :)  The two chihuahua mixes sleep with me and the border collie mix sleeps where ever she wants to which is usually wherever you need to go...

When I'm in the bed, my head hits one side and my feet hit the other side. Also, climbing over each other in the middle of the night is really a PITA.

Turning the dinette into a bed solves the "climbing over" problem but does not help with the head and feet problem. So, on our last trip I took the cushions from the dinette, put them end-to-end in the pod's "hallway", and slept there. There's way over 6' on the floor so my head and feet don't hit anything. We have a 177 with the slide out so we have more width in the hallway than non-slides (I think). Anyway, it worked out pretty well as long as my wife remembers I'm down there when she steps out of bed in the middle of the night :willy:

Since we're not using the dinette as a bed, we don't have to remove all of our junk from the table each night to set it up to be a bed. Of course the dinette cushions suck regardless of whether you're using them on the dinette bed or on the floor so our plan is to have a foam mattress custom made to the width and length of our "hallway" and covered. During the day, we can just throw the mattress up on the big bed out of the way. If the place that makes the mattress can figure out a way to "hinge" it in the middle or make it in 2 pieces, that will make handling and storage even easier.

I agree with the head/feet issue. Since wife/dog sleep on the dinette, I usually try for an angle across the bed. Even this is not a satisfactory solution. Still working on this one.

Out first night in the r-pod was not all we hoped for either. The mattress has to be the poorest element of the r-pod.

Theproblem with a 177 is that the mattress is locked on all 4 sides, and requires a short queen. We could not find a local supplier, until we went to Camping World (we had previously been to this RV temple and did sacrifice with our credit card).

They have a "mattress in a box". I was highly skeptical until I read the many reviews and gave it a go (besides, it was on sale).

The Queen-short mattress comes in a box 18"x18"x60". The mattress is rolled up and wrapped in plastic. You place the roll on the bed platform, cut the plastic, and out rolls a full-depth inner-spring mattress. I wish I had a video camera. It was amazing. I with that I could roll it up and watch it again, but there is NO way that is happening.

The mattress is firm and very comfortable.

Do you have a model number for that mattress? I can't find it on the Camping World website.

Thanks, Jim. That looks like a solution. We'll check out that mattress when we unwrap the circus wagon in the spring. We've tried 2 different air beds but didn't like them.

Lisa, we did what the above posts did - Camping World - mattress in a box - you'll love it.  Call them up and give them your spec's - mattress size l x w x h.  Am sure they will have what you need.  Anyway I have to agree, the mattress is the weakest link in the r-pod.  The new one from Camping
World is a 100% improvement.

Lisa, just got the latest Camper World sale catalogue in the mail today.  Called the "Decor and More Sale.  Mattress like we got is on page 4 (Eurotop Rv mattress).  Phone number is 800-626-5944.  They are all 8" deep and come in the following sizes  34 x 74, 49 x 74, 53 x 74, 53 x 79, and 60 x 74.  Or visit campinworld.com for more info.  Good Luck.  Oh yes, these are on sale, guess I bought mine at the wrong time.

I ordered mine online, got here in 3 days.  Do you mean are they in regular stores or at the Camping World store?  I would figure they would probably have it at Camping World, you have one located just 47 miles away in Fort Worth - 866-393-644.  Pretty cool, it comes tightly rolled, you could carry it under your arm, except it's too heavy for that.  Bring it inside your pod, cut the plastic, stand back and watch it unfold - pretty amazing.

We just got our short queen delivered today. They were on sale for $140 off and the shipping was less than $6. We will find out how well it sleeps next week when we go up to Texas A & M for a Corps of Cadets function.

I opted for the memory foam mattress I found on Overstock.com

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Select-Luxury-Home-RV-8-inch-Queen-size-Memory-Foam-Mattress/5699185/product.html?rcmndsrc=4

I found a coupon on retailmenot.com that I used for a discount. I think the delivered price was right at $285. This is a fine mattress - far superior to the stock R-Pod bed!

Just picked up my R-Pod 172,....Trying to find best solution for the dinette bed.  I'm thinking a foam egg-crate topper and double fitted sheet should do the trick.   Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Leonlewt, we use a memory foam topper, and it works out well.  You will probably find it to be more comfortable than sleeping on the cushions.

Thanks Tim,...I need it to be compact enough to roll up and store on the top bunk if we need dinette during the day.  so hoping something like that would be the answer.

We leave the table down all the time, but whenever we take the trailer in for service they will put the mattress topper and place it on the top bunk.  It may not roll up as well as you like, but it's doable.

We, too, use a mattress topper and always roll it up and keep it on the top bunk (along with the dog's stuff) so we can use the dinette. It fits well if you roll it up on the shorter axis, not the longer one.

Ok FYI I purchased the bunk mattress from camping world for my 176 and it is technically too wide. I knew as soon as I took it from the box. I chose to use anyway it only hangs over slightly. I love it.

We just spent the weekend sleeping on our new Eurotop mattress from Camping World. We also had a 2 inch foam topper we put over the mattress. That was left over from trying to make the stock mattress sleep-able. Both Adeliza and I think it was a fantastic improvement over stock. If one plans to sleep there more than a couple nights a year, it is a good investment, in our opinion.

Does the mattress in a box go on top of the stock mattress or replace it?

I think a roll up topper is my only option,...we have a 4 year old,..and if weather is cool or wet I see her having breakfast in the pod.  So i'll need a quick convenient way to break down the bed.  Thanks to all for the input. Keep it coming.  Camping season is almost here!

It replaces it. Our old mattress was 6" thick and weighted about 20 pounds. The new one is 8' thick and weighs over 50 lbs. A huge difference is quality. However, I guess they both could be used, but we felt no reason for that after sleeping on it. We only used the foam pad because we already had it and it was cut to size.

Ok so a follow up with the 8 inch camping world mattress on the top bunk of my 176 it did make me feel close to the roof though the comfort far out weighs the previous option. I also saw that IKEA also had a mattress that would fit better as it wasn't as tall and was the correct width. Wish the mattress was 2 inches narrower. Will keep it though and use it.
