Several locations for 2012 Eastern Round Up were discussed after Saturday night dinner.  It was generally agreed upon that whoever does the planning for next year's event live close to the campground site, as it makes things easier when making arrangements.  Please post your suggestions for locations and the date here!   :)

My vote is for the Horse Park in Lexington, KY again.  The same date generally works for us.  I think the Horse Park is one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever been to!

Although, it is closer to me, but still not close enough, I was thinking of somewhere near Asheville, NC.  You have the Biltmore and not very far away from other things.  Asheville is about 5 from the Horse Park.  I know that is a long way from most, but it took me 11 hours to get home.

I do not know of any campgrounds, but can definitely research a little more.

I like that idea too Jon.  I have only been to Biltmore once and it was a long time ago.  I would like to go back to that area and have some time to explore.  See what you can come up with and let us know!

I think there is a private campground in Fletcher NC that is in Asheville. The (Tab) people just had their round up this spring in that location. I will try to look it up and post it.. I

I went to the mailto:T@B - T@B round up.  The campground is called Rutledge Lake Travel Park.  While it is a nice campground, the sites are VERY tight.  They also have a pretty strict refund policy. (No refunds given.)  The did have a nice little fishing pond to walk dogs, and a nice club house we used.  Rob

We have been to the Asheville East KOA twice and just loved it. It's right on a river, very clean and close to alot of sites including Black Mountain, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, Mt. Mitchell, Biltmore and the city of Asheville.

We prefer Kentucky because of where we live but will consider anything within reasonable distance.  I do not like small tight spaces so hope to avoid that.  Lets all do our homework and come up with workable ideas.  The horse park was nice and we'd want at least that size camp site.

It would be nice if it could be at least as far east as the horse park was as that alone took 10 hours to travel to.  Closer to Va is good.  I agree that smaller sites may be a problem.

I would agree with the "further east" contingent. There are lovely parks, state and private, on the east side of the Alleghenies. Ocean, beaches, forests, lakes and rivers in abundance! Perhaps consideration can be given to a location "over here".

The Horse Park is a beautiful place with a really great campground.  We would be willing to travel east if that is what the group prefers.  I would like to remind the group that wherever we decide to have it, we need one of the organizers to live fairly close to the chosen campground.  Five weeks before the 2010 rally, our campground experienced a devastating flood. When the water went down, 90 percent of the park was covered with mud. If we had not had a person to go and personally meet with the people at the park, I don't think they would have worked so hard to get the park ready for us.
In the past we have had the park chosen and the organizers in place by October.  This gives the group time to contact the campground and get reservations in place.

Sometimes you just have to choose a location instead of asking for suggestions. Everybody has a different idea and all you accomplish is too many choices and no place to go. If you build it, they will come.

Agree with above.  Also with everyone throwing out suggestions unless you're able to support your campground suggestion I'm not sure we'll make much headway with it.

Carrie and I are willing to help support and put in as much time as we can possibly offer to help set things up.  Personally we wouldn't mind some travel time next year but though it might be wise to try and stay relatively central and not push too far north nor south.  That way we aren't excluding those from those locales.  So more east is fine, and a bit north or bit south either way might be most accomodating to all those interested.

I agree with Tink.  The best case scenario is that 4+ people will agree to host the rally.  They will then choose a location that they feel will meet the needs of the group. When the location is posted, there will be people who will want to attend. It is necessary to choose the date wisely.  Too far south or too late in the summer will bring unbearable heat, especially for our Podders from the northern areas.
That is my "two cents". Big smile I will be lurking from now on. LOL Let us know where and when.  Coach and I will be there.

Someone earlier mentioned Ashville.  What is the common opinion of KOA's?  My boss has been there and raved about the campground.  It's the Ashville East KOA. It's less than 10 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Biltmore House.  Such a beautiful area.  It's close enough for me to personally talk to the staff there to help make arrangements and I would be more than willing to do what I can.

We've stayed at a couple of different KOA's.  I think their prices depend on where they are located.  In a high tourist area, their prices will be higher.  The ones we have stayed at have been nice.  If the location for next years roundup is near us, we will be glad to help out however we can!  We would also be willing to travel if the time and place is right!

We are game for anywhere.  We loved the Horse Park as it was a very nice campground and centrally located for most.  NC would be fine for us but a long haul - especially long for the Canadians and Michganders.

I would prefer it not be the weekend before the 4th of July weekend.  Since Steve was scheduled to work the weekend of the Roundup and can only take one week of vacation at a time, we had to make a choice between the Roundup and being with my siblings and families at the river in Michigan for the 4th as we have done for the last 40 years.  We chose the Roundup but not sure we could do it next year.

Ditto on the staying away from the 4th of July weekend. We would have liked to have extended our trip but decided to hustle home to avoid the traffic.

What are people's thoughts on making it off season - May or September? It would be almost guaranteed that it wouldn't be too hot.

I am all for moving it further east. We have a lot of people in Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas that were not able to attend because of the long drive. I'm wondering if somewhere in the Smoky Mountains would work for the majority. And would the folks from Ohio and Kentucky be willing to drive that far? The area is loaded with small private campgrounds that we might be able to take over for a weekend.

Someone needs to volunteer to scope out campgrounds and report back to the group. I would be willing to be one of the organizers, but cannot liaise with the campground unless I can convince people to drive to Rhode Island (The only really nice campground I know of in this area.)

The people who have been organizing the roundups have done a really wonderful job for the past two years and I'm sure they would be willing to share their experiences, but it's probably time for some more people to step up to the plate.

Will people from Forest River be willing to come to North Carolina?  If you want to include them and are looking for something a little closer, there's always parks like Indiana Dunes State Park: http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2980.htm.  It's right on Lake Michigan and tends to keep a bit cooler during the summer.

The downside is that park reservations can be made no sooner than 6 months ahead of time, which may make things tricky.  Also, it's a very popular place to camp.

There are still those of us that interpret "eastern" to be east of the Allegheny mountains. As Kentucky is 10 to 12 plus hours from the mid-Atlantic and NewEngland, so are the Smokies... It would be appreciated if consideration was given to the distances to be traveled, and we do appreciate the fact that the folks in the area we call the "Midwest" would have a similar journey to get to this area.

No areas are being excluded or not considered.  It's just there is a large concentration of Podders here in our part of the "eastern" US that have in the past stepped up and put in a ton of work to organize, coordinate, plan for and create the past two events.

Also concerning dates, we're still rather fond of June, someone earlier mentioned September but there's usually a smaller fall gathering that goes on.

I'll just throw this out there, since for two years now Carrie and I haven't been able to make it to Maumee up in Ohio, but is anyone game for doing the 2012 ERU at Maumee?

I want to assure those of you who would like to have a rally next year that it is not so difficult to organize the rally.  Yes, there is some work to do.  If several people step up and offer to help, it is an enjoyable experience.  Let me remind you that it "takes a village" to make it successful.
If you are interested in having a rally in your area, get some others to help you and set a date.  Podders will come.  It may not be the same ones who have been coming to Kentucky, but it will be people who love to gather.
On the subject of Maumee.  Let me warn you that, from long experience, I can tell you that the weather on Lake Erie can be somewhat squirrelly. LOL Once, in June, we had a day of 102 degrees and then the rest of the week, it was less than 70 degrees.   Don't get me wrong. I love Maumee Bay SP and the Lake Erie area.  We go there at least once a year.  Perhaps our friends from Canada or northern Ohio could chime in on this subject.

The weather everywhere the last couple of years has been "squirrelly". :0)  I will say that if there are storms in the area, they are more likely to be near the lake.  BUT there was a tornado warning at KHP the day we got there so I'm not sure we should base the location on weather.  I say, just pick a place and the pods will come.  Good luck Carrie!

i think that Maumee has potential.  It's not far off the Turnpike, which may make it easier for those form the east to come, and it has potential for people from Forest River to come as it's only a couple of hours from Elkhart.

O.K., so I found a campground 10 minutes north of Chattanooga, Tn. call Raccoon Mountain Caverns.  Their web site is:   http://www.raccoonmountain.com - www.raccoonmountain.com   It is a little pricey; $27 a night; but with enough reservations we should be able to get a better rate. It is close enough to everything Chattanooga has to offer; plus it has a very large cave on site, hiking trails, etc.  Check it out; they have a pretty good web site with maps and pix. Feedback ?

We stayed at Raccoon Mountain in March.  It looks better on the website than in person.  The site that they put us in when I reserved, was so short that our Pod AND truck were sticking out in the road. There was no room to put up the dome or an eazyup. I went up the next morning and asked for a larger site.  They said they saved their longer ones for motorhomes.  They finally gave us a site near the office, which has about 10 large drive thrus. There are some nice sites on the outer edges of the campground.  They are in fairly sunny areas. I am not sure that they would have 30 suitable sites for a rally. We enjoyed being in the area.  There are some great things to see, Lookout Mt, Ruby Falls, Rock City. Perhaps someone from the area could drive over and look at it to see if they agree with my assessment. By the way, the tornado that hit the area this past spring was very near the campground, I think.  There was a tornado warning the second day we were there.  When I asked the manager what the tornado plans were for the park, he and his helper just laughed.  They said not to worrry but if there was a tornado, we could go to the cave.  I may be wrong, but I think the cave has a gate which is locked after office hours.
Gee, just read this over and I sound like such a naysayer.Embarrassed  I just want the next rally to be as great as the previous two. I don't mean to offend anyone.

EDIT:
I just remembered a campground in Pigeon Forge, TN that friends think is great.  It is called RIVERSEDGE. Although a little pricey, perhaps we could get them to come down some.  It is on the trolly line which takes you to lots of places in Pigeon Forge.  I personally don't want to drive once we get there. LOL  Just a thought.  Google it.

Check out this website:   http://www.chattacamp.com/index.html - http://www.chattacamp.com/index.html     sounds interesting, although pricey.

As I am not near any great areas to assist in setting up campgrounds, I hope that my comments won't be considered too negative.  My concern with Raccoon Mountain campground is that they restrict certain breeds of dogs.  As we always travel with our dog, Panzer, we would be unable to attend if it is at this campground.  (see my profile photo).  I am not sure if this would affect anyone else that would be attending or not as I don't remember seeing any other breeds that were on this list at the last roundups.  It is just a shame that dogs can't be judged on individual merits instead of their breed.  I have a different list of dogs that I worry about.    Ok, back to the regular discussion.

    Brin,

It is just a shame that dogs can't be judged on individual merits instead of their breed.

Or, better yet, come up with some way to base it on the owner/trainer/handler of the dog. Any dog can be a problem without good training and proper control, doesn't matter the breed.

Heck, I'm sure our little 12 pound rat terrier could be a problem if she hadn't been given proper training. Of course, she's only tall enough to inflict injuries from the knees down but that's beside the point <LOL>.

I think Gatlinburg would be good.

Has anyone stayed at any of the campgrounds there?

I could not find anything near Asheville that was big enough.

Just searching very quickly, this campground, from the map, seems like it would work.

We stayed in Pigeon Forge in 2009 at Clabough's.  The sites were very small, but I don't have anything to compare to in the area.

The location was good and they have a trolley stop on site.

I did a search on Foothills RV Park.  It only has 37 sites. According to the review, it is a nice family owned park which is located behind some restaurants.  They seemed to enjoy it.  Someone else do a search and see what you think.

Do in a we have a current membership map?  We did this once before to see where a mid point would be for those interested in the 2012 round up.  That would be a fair way to pick the general location and then we'd go from there.

I cannot find the map.  If my memory serves me well, we are as far as Illinois on the west. On the east, we go from Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, etc on the Atlantic coast.  In the north we had Michigan-Ontario, Canada. As to the south, I think this past year we had folks from Georgia (not sure how far down). If we don't count Rita (Sylviablue) and Ed, we had no one from Florida.
I could be wrong about this.  Feel free to correct me. I can handle it. Big smile

Looking at Travis's map, I'm wondering about Mohican State Park in Ohio for a future roundup location.  This is near  Bob and Pam Delay so they may want to comment. I've never camped down there but it's beautiful country and lots of trails and caves and bike paths.  I personally prefer this type of camping to the chaos of Pigeon Forge - but that's me.  The website also says they can accommodate groups up to 100 people. Go to http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/tabid/769/Default.aspx - http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/tabid/769/Default.aspx  to check it out.

Thanks.  For the past two rallies we have tried to have the campground chosen by October. That gives Podders plenty of time to get vacations planned. I think Federal parks have a 6 month reservation window.    Wherever we decide on, we need someone to be the contact with the campground. I hope your TV works great with your Pod.  We have an F 150 and are very pleased with the towing ability.

OK guys, I did some campground scouting Saturday.  For personal reasons as well as potential sites for the 2012 Eastern Round-up.  Of the 6 CG’s I visited Saturday, only 2 have round-up potential.

The first one is the Asheville East KOA - for a KOA it’s really one of the nicer ones I’ve seen.  It’s easy to get to. Close to many attractions in the Asheville area as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway. Below is a map of the campground.  The only suitable area is section A.  It’s the dark blue and red sites at the lower left.  All the yellow sites have only 20 amp service.  The dark blue is 30 amp full hook up, there are 32 of these sites together. The red is 50 amp full hook up, there are 10 of these.  I have the names of 2 people I can contact if we are interested.  Here is their website:  http://koa.com/campgrounds/asheville-east/ - http://koa.com/campgrounds/asheville-east/

The other possibility is Mountain Stream RV Park. It’s located in Marion, NC. It’s about 40 minutes east of Asheville. Their brochure says it’s "The prettiest little park this side of Heaven" and they are right. This is THE nicest campground I’ve seen. The sites and the entire campground is immaculate. Super nice people. Every site is level and most are on Buck Creek (great trout stream). We are definitely going to spend some time at this CG before the season ends. From what I could see there are 26 available sites, all with 30 amp service, full hook up, free wi-fi and cable. CG map is below. It looked like the light blue sites were long-term sites, with Rv’s on them. If we have any interest in this campground, let me know and I will talk to Ron and get more details. Here is their website:   http://www.mountainstreamrvpark.com/index.html - http://www.mountainstreamrvpark.com/index.html

Although I am not pushing for the Gatlinburg area, I have found a campground in Pigeon Forge that looks interesting.  I was just browsing this morning and came across Kings Holly Haven Campground.  It is in Pigeon Forge. Their website is http://www.hollyhavenrvpark.com - www.hollyhavenrvpark.com and they will save a block of sites for us.  It does not look like it has a lot of trees.  I spoke to someone on the phone. It is not cheap. $29 +tax for full hookups plus cable.  If we were to stay by the creek, where there are trees, it is $3 extra per night. However by Gatlinburg standards that is a fair price. The use of the pavillion would be free. If you are interested in looking at it, go to their site and click on reservations. We may be traveling to that area the first weekend of October.  Let me know if you want me to check it out.

Since several  of us are going to one or both of the Michigan Roundups, I was thinking bout our friends from the south. It probably will be too far for most of you to travel. How would the members feel about an informal rally at the kentucky Horse Park the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October. We would have no activities unless someone want to volunteer to be th organizer.  This is what we did at  Mumee and it worked out well. Each person would reserve from the Kentucky reservation site.  We could pick a loop. Reservations would probably need to be made as early as possibe]

That was loop C.  I forgot to mention that you cannot reserve more than a year out.  So we would have to wait until the end of September to look at booking. It is possible that the park is already full since people reserve ahead for the Halloween Season.

I feel that way too, so instead of camping, I'm planning trips!!

One other option is that the synchronized fireflies will be synching (?) the second week, 6/11 week, so would you rather come to the Smokies and go see the fireflies? If some of you don't want to drive that far, I understand, we'll just go to the horsepark.

I looked at the online reservation system and we could stay in the same loop/sites as last year starting June 21st (a Thursday)

We would love to join in the fun Smile

Okay, I'm going to call tomorrow and make a reservation for 4 nights beginning June 13th. I've picked my site as 198. How's that sound for everyone?
