So far we have added a mirror to the back of the bath door, magnetic/white board above controls by main door, changed to a much better mattress, and today added a 12v outlet and modified the street side dinette bench to gain some storage space..

I am slowly rebuilding this thread after Photobucket destroyed it..

What kind of mattress?  Where did you get it and how much, if I may ask?

We got the mattress from Camping World, this one:

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/eurotop-innerspring-mattresses/2571 - http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/eurotop-innerspring-mattresses/2571

They had $5 shipping, it was $337 to the door when we bought it three weeks ago. It's a little higher now I see. It beats the stock mattress by about 1000%.

Cut it in half, added a cross piece, two cleats to the floor, secured a "wall" to the cross piece and cleats, added hinge and finger hole to the right hand piece of lid.

Smart    ...very smart. We all know storage is at a premium in smaller campers. Will probably copy your design.

Here's another space generator. I was under all the cabinets in our 171 looking for a possible water leak source. I pulled out the panels the factory places in front of the utility spaces. When I put them back, I pushed them up against the wires etc, I gained 6 inches under the refrigerator and two or three under/ behind the center cabinet and door. The only thing I could figure out for the leak was high pressure on the input from the camp water system putting to much on a connection.

Date Posted: 23 Aug 2011 at 8:46am
I saw there may be some to be gained under there when I was looking under it to get a general idea about placement of the outside shower box. A 177 already has a storage nook under the fridge, thats where dog bowls and chow go..Smile

But under the sink and stove top, in the slide there are two panels, and a small "box" could possibly be added there..

about your leak.. do you use a water pressure regulator? 'tis a good idea... We got to "dry camp" after some unknown pressure level disintegrated a couple lines in our all original (at the time) 30y.o. Airstream.

Furpod - Nice additions.

Is that the mattress from Camping World? We looked at one at Camping World and we're thinking about getting one. From seeing the way they're packed when new, putting one in place in a 177 seems like it would be easy. However, I'm wondering how tough it would be to get it out of there if I needed to (e.g., when I need to get to the water valves for winterizing or whatever). What do you think? Does it seem like you could get it out of there if you had to?

Thanks,
-- Steve

Furpod,

Saw you were thinking of doing something with the undersink space in your slideout...there is more room down there than you realize.  If you remove those panels that make the small "box" you'll find that the bottom is finished clear to the back of the slide.  I took mine out, moved the wires to a more tidy location, took one of the smaller "sides" and used it to block the area behind the drawers and called it a day.  Now I have access to the entire area under the sink.  Takes about 20 minutes, and gives you TONS more space.

OK, so it has been a bit quiet around the house.. but here are a couple new things we have done..

1st.. LED lights.. these are the eBay flat panel lights.. I think we have about $20 in the whole camper. The lights are all 12 LEDs except over the sink and in the bath, those are 24's.. They look good, but it's hard to photograph them well..

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

Our old dog REALLY struggled with the step, so I built a platform to extend it both under the camper and out about 2" also, much better for him now... I have thought of a couple changes already, so will be redoing it soon, but it will look the same...

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

and finally, the mini blinds were driving me crazy because I kick them regularly.. so we replaced the ones in the "bedroom" with drapes she made.

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

I really don't like the job the factory did hanging the valances, so I am going to make and hang new ones, and the one over the "foot of the bed" will incorporate a shelf.

OK, so I don't want you all to think we have not shown the Pod some love the last couple weeks..

Battery cut off switch for storage..

But it did occur to me that the pod will likely stay plugged in all winter.. so not necessarily a massively useful mod for us, but hey.. I had the switch..

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

https://postimages.org/" rel="nofollow">

It's fall, GO CAMPING!!!

Oh, and the observant may just notice the LP tank cover doesn't seem to "fit right"... we took one of the 30 pounders off the stream and mounted it on the pod for extended winter/cold weather abilities... Have not thought of a good plan for a cover change just yet...

Where did you buy your battery switch at Furpod?  I eventually had to remove the one I had all together.  Somehow it was the cause of my battery draining all the time.

Not a necessary mod for us either, as the Pod will most likely just stay plugged in but your switch looks of better quality than mine so I might be inclined to try again!

I looked and looked, finally found it at the boat shop in E-town. I really don't like them (R&W Marine), but darned if they didn't have what I needed. was under $20, seems very well made, but only came with 1 key.. hence the lanyard.

I think I'll head down that way then.  The one I bought was like $2 from Amazon and I guess I got what I paid for.  Thanks for the name of the place also.  I hadn't thought about boat places.  Not sure if the 'ville has any that I know of left so a quick ride down the expressway seems in order!

You *might* try Salty Paws in Fern Creek.. pretty neat little shop. I got a marine "outdoors" 12v acc. plug from him, and a adapter to blow out my water lines.. good guy.. great dogs.

I didn't notice if he had a switch, since I had already found one, but it's close, and you like dogs, and it just might save you a trip..lol

Just used 1/2" 7 ply plywood, cut it to width, for depth I went back to the "stop" and came forward 1-1/2" past the front of the existing step, drilled holes corresponding with the holes already in the metal step, bolted it down with a couple 1/4"x 20 x 2" bolts and washers, using a lock nut underneath. (I have decided to drill new holes because the plywood is not supported under the addition very well) painted the plywood with indoor/outdoor paint, then cut the carpet to match, stapled it down..

An update to the step mod.. I did this earlier in the year, but have been meaning to get a picture up.. My painted plywood "beta" version did OK, but started to delaminate in the spring..

I found a 48" oak stair tread on sale at the local home store, cut in half, which gives me enough tread to make a second one in the future if needed...  I stained it, put 4 coats of spar varnish on it, then added some non-skid tape. I actually bought 1 large piece of non-skid and cut it as you see.

So today.. added a conversion kit to the Fantastic Fan, which of course is already Fantastic..

But Like most podders, we roll with dogs. And we worry about hot weather camping and the a/c going down, tripping a breaker or losing shore power.. What we have been doing is leaving the windows open on the dome side, and the vent open. So that some air flow would happen in an emergency. Not ideal. So I ordered the 6000R/417 upgrade for the FF..

It's the bombdiggity for sure. Took about 20 minutes to instal. It has reverse flow, rain sensor, and fully automatic operation. So IF the a/c quits, the vent will come on at a pre-set temperature, and turn back off if the a/c comes back on..

here is a quick video of it coming on and opening..

Is this a complete swap out of the fan with just a simple electrical hook up or something different ?

We have the "auto-on" feature on our model but only 3 speeds "outbound". On our previous camper we had the ability to change the direction of air flow and I miss that   ...

Thanks    ...

It's a kit that replaces just the controls and base, the motor, lid and outer housing all stay in place.

Latest mod was to move the TV to a spot it's actually viewable while in bed. This is the only place we watch TV from/in, if we watch TV. In the stock mounting location, it's way to close to you, and it can't actually be tilted to view well. So I removed it from the bottom of the center head bumper cabinet (though we have never bumped into it, many report doing so...)

Hung some cleats on the side of the shower enclosure and rear ceiling, cut a shelf and added a lip, placed a 120v outlet left over from the iPad charger mod to the shower wall, taping into the power running down to the outside outlet. The shelf is also supported by the valance, which I remounted to make sure it was firm and screwed into the aluminum framing studs of the outside wall.

Had this done while there at the rally.. don't know that we NEEDED it, but is handy, and has 18" of travel.. about 6" more than the manual crank had, I like that...

Another rally mod.. Several people bought these and got them installed.. but I will point out..

WE WERE FIRST!!! LOL.

We have had keyless entry on our last couple trucks, and really like it.. so..

https://postimg.org/image/vuofz9ntp/" rel="nofollow">

It is a "Bauer NE" keyless entry system. So far it works great.. of course, it's only been a week.. but probably 40 cycles so far.

Great mods.  Would you be so kind to tell us how you wired that 12 volt D.C. outlet?  I really want to install one, but I am no electrician .... not even a amateur one.  I know that it probably had to be tied into the breaker box, but where, how, and .... is a mystery.

I did not run a new circuit. I used squeeze taps to tap into the power lines for the propane detector in the front, and the heater fan power in the rear. Those are two circuits that are always energized if 12v is available. Just use a DMM to probe the wires, + to + and - to - it really is that simple.

here is a video that shows their use..

Dang, it's a never ending thing..

Another thing we have "done".. this is a 1 piece carpet set, fitted to the 177 pod. It was originally available from Forest River, but they dropped it from the catalog not long after we bought our pod..

I have no idea if these are still available. And most people don't want carpet in the pod/camper anyways, but we find it's easier for an old dog to stand or walk on..

Finally got around to adding the dual LP bottle rack.. Unbolted the tie downs and such from the factory rack, then cut the welds holding the base plate with a side grinder, a sawzall would work also, then ground down the welds, spot painted the bare metal, found if I turned the new rack "backwards" (I think), I could even use the factory bolts and holes in both pieces.

https://postimg.org/image/th54m4ul9/" rel="nofollow">

Now to decide on a cover.. I like the hard ones with the little door in the top.. probably what we will go with.

EDIT:

yep, went with the hard cover.. added the cross tie down bungies over the lid, as on-line, many seem to have lost that cover on the road..

Added a 64 inch sewer hose holder, because the 15 foot Rino hose wasn't going even halfway into the factory tube.. lol. The sewer tube mounting holes are 64 inches on center.. the frame rails 61 and 3/4..

On the curb side I used rivet insert nuts into the bottom of the frame, then on the street side I made a bracket out of 2x2 angle, attached it to the frame with the same, then just drilled and bolted the tube to it.

I put something similar on my 172.  It was very handy.  Unfortunately, I must have scrapped on a nasty road in Utah and tore loose one end from its bolds because, midway through rush-hour Salt Lake City traffic, one end of it began dragging.  Passersby frantically motioned to me but I had no idea what they wanted.  I pulled on shoulder and discovered the problem.  I had to unbolt the whole tube, throw it in the back of the SUV ... from there it worked just fine.  Ouch

When we got our 177 several years ago, I bought a 72" holder for a long waste hose. I've never seen them advertised but you can buy them directly from Valterra. You have to call and ask for them.

The 72" tube is a perfect length to fit inside the outside storage compartments. For our 177, the ends of the tube are available from either of the 2 rear cargo compartment doors.

And, no, before you ask, it doesn't smell inside the rpod and, no, there are no nasty drips inside the storage area. If it had either of those problems, I can assure you that I wouldn't be using it because my wife wouldn't stand for it <LOL>.

I was looking for a place on my new 177 to bolt on the waste hose as I did on my 172 (see Furpod picture above.)  However, where I bolted it on the 172 between the tires and the end of the Pod seems to be occupied by water tanks.  There may be a place on the front just behind the tiny factory tube, however.  But that's a project that awaits the spring.  Problem with fitting it in the inside the pass-through storage compartment is that I have it pretty much filled with "stuff" but I might resort to that.

It doesn't take up much space and you can put stuff on top of it.

Any chance you could post a picture of the area between the shelf and your original media center? Did you reposition the light on the shelf side so it's not obscured?

We were taking a look at doing a similar shelf idea, and thinking of getting another of those light fixtures; keep one for above the shelf, and add in a new one for under. Before doing that, I'd dig to see how much light you're getting with it projecting right in the middle of the shelf. Efficiency is king.

Another from last year, that didn't get uploaded.. In case you don't know, there are only like 3 key patterns for the cargo doors. And while it's not like we keep a lot of valuables in there, still like to lock them and at least frustrate a bad guy a bit.. lol

So we installed these, there are two cargo hatches on a 177.. they are :
Combi-Cam 7850R-L Large 1 1/8" combination locks. Very nice, and you can set the combo to any 3 digits you want. Install was pretty straight forward, just unscrew the current ones, and place these in position. We reused the pull, and really had to, because without it in place, the turn dial rubbed the trim..

Ok, so some more mods have happened.. Here is a gauge panel I put in because the factory battery/sensor gauge doesn't cut it for me. I ordered the display and switch on eBay for about $3 total, had the piece of panel laying around.. This mounted on the wall next to the thermostat and bathroom light switch in a our 177. I stole the power from the lead to the light switch.

So now when off grid I know how my battery usage is going a whole lot more accurately.

Added a door port hole... Bought the window on Amazon.

Added tape to the door for protection and to lay out my cut line using the inside circumference of the window frame..

Drilled a hole, then followed my line with a jig saw. The door is 1 1/2 inches thick, nothing but foam core and fiberglass.

Removed tape, put in/on a bead of silicone, screwed the two halves together, clamping the door with the window flanges.

We changed out our converter, the factory one isn't/wasn't bad, I just had never seen it go into bulk mode, and I tried to send it there on purpose, it also doesn't have a de-sulfation mode, and I think that is important. AND, I had this converter for the Airstream, and then found the issue with the 'streams 35 year old converter and fixed it... So this was just sitting on a shelf..

So I cut all power, removed the front of the power distribution box, and pulled out the WFCO converter to compare.. Looked pretty close..

After removing the stock converter from it's hold down tray, I was able to mount the new, had to drill one hole. Wired it up.

I discovered, that in order to get the tray back in and clear the front of the panel, a little Dremel work would need to be done. So I removed the back of the WFCO box. Better airflow now!

All bolted down..

I was going to use the same wires that were on the WFCO converter, but they are aluminum, and just a shade to underrated for the load because of that. So I sourced new wire at Lowes for about $2.

Reference view of the stock converter..

http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Jack/Stromberg-Carlson/JET-3500.html" rel="nofollow - It's this one . I did not in fact instal it. I intended to, but a FR tech at Goshen had a moment, and did it for me while we were out sight seeing. I bought it directly from FR while at the International Rally. It was supposed to just be delivered to the pod..

You really should be able to do it yourself, it's 3 bolts, and a simple 12v DC hot wire hookup to the battery. I have changed out a couple tongue jacks in my day..

Park the pod on level ground, level and chock it. Put stabilizers down firmly. Raise foot of manual jack off the ground, remove 3 bolts that hold it on the tongue, put electric jack in it's place, tighten 3 bolts. Run wire to battery box, hook + to +. Enjoy the wrrrrrrr of success.

Did a faucet change today. There have been several instances of the factory $4 faucet failing in truly dramatic fashion, and ours has always felt "iffy". So we picked out a new one and I installed it today. We also decided placing it off center would make it easier to work around/with in the small Pod kitchen.

Removed the old 2 hole, and found the old one used a 1 inch hole, and needed 1 3/8th for the new one hole fixture. So I made a guide to fit in the 1" hole, and drilled out with a 1 1/4 hole saw.

After that it was just a matter of dropping it in, tightening down and hooking up. The water lines were threaded the same as the old one. :)

After leak testing, ready to button furpod back up.

Only 2 trips so far, but it's great. Way better feeling than the factory one. Having it off center is also handy. We needed as much room as we could get in there at the Spring Fling Rally to make our pasta salad for the bring your own protein cookout. Also makes it easy to get out of the way when you are working in the sink.

Well, after 5 years we decided it was time to do a couple preventative maintenance items, so we ordered 3 new D rated tires from eTrailer, and installed them.. No pictures.. they are same size as originals, 205 75 14.

We also swapped out our dual battery set-up from 12vs to 6v's. Our batteries were also 5 years old, and while in good shape, we wanted to do them BEFORE they might fail when needed.. so..

http://www.allbatterysalesandservice.com/browse.cfm/4,576.html" rel="nofollow - Ordered a box that holds a pair of GC-2 batteries end to end.. Bought Trojan T-105's from Batteries Plus locally.

Then it was a pretty straight forward installation.. Just need to remember the batteries now get wired in series, vs parallel with 12v's. I made up a short jumper cable myself, and reused the battery cutoff we already had. Bolted it down with some self tapping screws, put a drain hole in one corner.

Fits on the factory battery tray just fine..

Few seconds with the dremel to install the switch.

Wired up and tested..

Had to find some longer battery box straps to get around the new box, I screwed the guides down and ran the straps around the box and tray.
I also needed a longer propane hose between the regulator and camper itself, I think if you have the single propane install from the factory, this wouldn't be an issue because the regulator is mounted closer to the trailer, and lower.

Just an FYI for those that don't have a water regulator, don't turn the outside faucet on all the way, only open it as far as you need to,

Back on page 1 I think I showed that we put in a couple 12v outlets.. well in the last 5 years, USB powered devices have overrun our lives.. LOL, So I upgraded to outlets that give us 12v outlets AND USB chargers powered on the 12v system.

Hi furpod
Your mods are amazing! I only wish I had the skills to do some of them. One question I'd really appreciate some help with is how do I re attach a valance that came down (long sad story!). I see the 2 screws going thru the fabric but can't see how they are attached to the valance and the wall. Looks like there are some plastic anchors in the wall? If you have any pics or detailed instructions, I sure would appreciate it!
Thanks...
Tim

On our Pod, the valances are held up with "L" brackets. Two screws into the wall, two into the inside of the valance box. I have heard of some being done where the screws literally just went through the fabric at the top and sides, into the wall. Ours had no inserts or anything, they were just into/through the wall board. When I remounted them, I made sure to catch the window framing with the screws. It meant lowering the valance about a quarter inch. Since we were doing curtains.. no big deal.

I used squeeze taps. Simple, safe, UL approved.

So.. the newest pods come with a recessed cook top. The slide kitchen models have the least counter space of all the pods, so having a flush area to work for prep, doing dishes, etc, seemed like a good idea. So I picked up the new style mounting kit at Goshen during the big rally. The factory said they didn't think it could be installed without removing the counter top.. BAH!!

So here is a BUNCH of pictures of the install...

While at the Goshen rally this summer, we had the front rock guard, which is now standard on R-Pods, installed on ours. We ran through tar or fresh asphalt a couple different times this year, this will make clean up much easier. Wink
