Has anyone camped in the summer heat in a 172.  We are leaning toward that model. My husband is concerned since there are no windows on the bunk end, that it might be stuffy.
Any information is appreciated.

I don't think that will be a problem.  Open a window or 2 and turn on the exhaust fan to a slow speed and you have have plenty of air circulating.

We have a 172 and the outside temp was never a problem.  The AC units are loud, but cool nicely.

I was in Az and NM this July, pretty hot.  So as not to freeze out the top bunk,( which the a/c will do), I use a milder temp on the A/c and have a 12" fan on the floor, pointed under the top bunk.  I get the little extra breeze I like and we both sleep well.

Just camped in what I call cold, and just ran the heater.

Thanks.  I have been looking at this site and wishing for so long.  Now that we are ordering, it will probably be January before we get it since Thanksgiving and Christmas periods will probably be a slow time at Forest River.  We have camped in a popup for 20+ years so camping is in my blood. I use the plastic storage boxes that are designed to slide under a bed.  Those fit very well.  Anything else I found is too tall.

Pepper,
I also got some small plastic baskets that fit in the fridge.  They keep small things like mustard and mayo from sliding around in the fridge when you are towing the pod.   I bought a pack of small stick on hooks from Wal Mart to stick on the wall to hang keys on!  My first trip, I was always misplacing keys to the truck or jeys to the camper!  The hooks were a great help!
I'll see what else I can remember and let ya know!
I am getting ready to order from Camping World a towel rack that hangs over the bathroom door.  We found that we really needed one of those for wet wash cloths and face towels, etc.

I'll see what else I can remember and let ya know!

Be sure to check out other stores besides camping product stores! Smile  We found lots of our "stuff" that way and it is lots cheaper.

I got the over the door towel rack at Bed Bath & Beyond for $9 and we found the lynx blocks to level with at Walmart for 1/2 of what the dealer wanted - also the Rhino sewer hose was there but we had already paid more at the dealers!  Embarrassed

The products you want are out there and lots of fun to look for.

Congrats on your 172!  Big smile  We also have the 172 and love it!  We tow with a Dodge Ram 1500 and do not use a sway bar.  I would assume this would be similiar??  Confused  I bought 3 plastic containers at Walmart for storage under the bunk.  They work great, one for my clothes, one for hubby and one for towels, wash cloths and such.  Still have room on the side for our shoes!  There really is a lot of storage in the 172!  Enjoy!!Star

We 177 owners are very envious about the other models storage.

But I'm sure lots of great ideas will surface as the 177s stream out
of FR and into the hands of campers.

The sway bar is always a good idea, our pods being so short and single axle have the tendency to sway. As far as a WD hitch not really neccesary with an F-150

We ordered our 172 today.  The dealership did not have one on the lot, and I can't remember how many doors and drawers are on the lower cabinet.  Not sure if the cabinet overhead of the stove is one door or two.  Don't get me wrong, we have seen the 172 but it was a while back.  Any info would be appreciated. The 172 has one door over the stove and one open area with a mesh net.  You'll find the tv cables to be in the way behind the closed door.  Review the mod section for ideas to fix the problem.

The lower cabinet has one door and three drawers.  I think one drawer is shorter than the other two.

That is the one I would have chosen if we were to purchase with one of the new color options! I love red as an accent color and think that will make for a beautiful interior. You will love it!! Can't wait to see it at the roundup!!

If that interior had been available we would have gotten that one too. Like I said before, it's a little more interesting than the neutral interior in our pod, but not as gaudy as my Hawaiian shirt collection.

Well Podders, I need some advice.  I was informed over the weekend that Forest River will not be able to deliver my 172 until the end of January if we still want the Saffron interior.  If I want the brown interior or the cinnamon, I can get the pod in the next few weeks.  I don't really need it until the end of February.  We have reservations in Florida for the month of March.  I am afraid if I say I will take the Saffron interior that I won't get the pod in time to go to Florida!! If the Saffron interior is important to you, then wait and take the chance that it will be ready in time for your trip.  As for me, I would go for the cinnamon and play it safe.  You just never know what could happen between now and then.  We have the 172 and we don't even see the fabric, because it is covered most of the time with bedding.  We removed the extra cushions that are not used for the bed.  So the only fabric you see would be the small window toppers.  Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all the advice.  We made the decision today to stay with the Saffron.  My husband thinks it will lighten up the interior. He is really concerned about the lack of windows on the bunk end.  I made it perfectly clear to the salesman that I HAD to have a travel trailer by the end of February. He assures me that we will have it by the end of January.  We will see.  If they do not come through, we will just go up to Couch's and buy one.  It won't be as close for us, but they are a great group to deal with.

You're going to love it no matter the color.  I think they are all great.  If you are like us, you'll be outside most of the time anyway.  Couch's is also very easy to deal with and the last time we were there, they had lots of units in their parking lot.

I am excited about getting the Pod.  One problem we have is that we are getting snow again. Unless we go very far south on our short jaunt to make sure things work, we will not be able to use the water etc.
The window is approximately 15 x 21.  I think the price is a little under $200.  We are having a couple of things done.  Go to the FR website and look at the exterior pictures in the photo gallery.  I am assuming our door will look like the one in the drawing.
No, we will not be going through North Carolina unless we decide to do it on the way home.  We are trying to visit relatives and friends in GA and FL as well as doing a lot of camping.

We are getting closer to bringing our Pod home.  Our dealership installed the window in the door today and was kind enough to let us drop by and see it.  I needed to look at the storage possibilities and measure for storage containers. We won't be bringing it home until next week.  As soon as the road crews clear the roads the wind blows it right back on the road.  The window appears to be your standard rv door window.  It is a frosted glass.  I think it will add needed light to that end of the 172. I have to say that I think my popup had more storage space.
The saffron interior is not bright at all.  Actually, I was expecting yellow leaves but they are a light green.  The background appears to be more of a burgandy than a red color.
My husband is soooo happy with the axle risers.  I think he is finally "on board" with the Pod experience.  One of the shop guys asked if we were aware of the Forum and the Pod Roundup at Fort Boonesborough.  Rick just smiled and told him we certainly were.  Big smile
I had a few reservations about spending a month in the Pod in Florida.  However, after our visit, I am sure that we will be quite comfortable.

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday when I posted about our Pod.  I was surprised to find that we have that hanging thing in the bathroom.  It is a great idea, but I think it will be very hard to use the little room for its orginal purpose. LOL  There is a shower rod type thing running right to left which could be used to hang our towels.  We will probably try to put the hanging thing in the r dome.  I KNOW I will find some use for it.
Also, FR has been listening to the forum.  We have a device to hold the overhead cabinet door up while removing plates etc.

It is something like the hinge that several have put on their doors.

The hinge device was always standard on the overhead doors in all except the slide-out models. Our dealer tried to put the same one in our overhead door (174) and it didn't work because of the configuration of the door size.

Confused That is strange.  I wonder why they did not put them on the ones with the slide.  I was not expecting to have one after all the discussion on here.  Big smile Happy that it is there.

I am thinking the doors on our 171 don't open upwards but sideways like a standard cabinet.

Today we have a cute little Pod sitting in our driveway. Big smile  I love it and my husband is getting excited about it too.  After looking at it again, I have decided that there is plenty of room for our stuff and the two of us.   It has the axle risers which is a good thing since we would not have made it into the driveway without it.  My husband said he hardly knew that it was behind the F 150.  Going up hills it slowed a little. We had a window installed in the door.  It lets in lots of light.

The people at our dealership were very helpful.  I am really satified with our choice.

CONGRATS Pepper !!! Glad its home safe !!!
I noticed that when we picked ours up we thought the same thing, plenty of room for us !
Those "risers" come in handy really quickly, don't they ???
Glad you had a satisfactory tow home .... Im sure the F150 is up for the task.
We are getting the door window too !!! I think we may go with a smaller 8" if available.
There are already 6 windows now, so letting light in is no problem.

Congratulations pepperpod for finally getting your 172.  Now you have to get to work and get it ready for your trip into the southland.
Take all of the snow with you so those guys down there can enjoy the white stuff too.Big smile

Thanks Sandpiper.  I have been "soon to be" for so long that I had forgotten it.  It is snowing here tonight and I hear that you may be getting "feet" of snow! Is that true?
I started as soon as I got home today getting it ready for the road.  For anyone who is interested, that little heater works almost tooo well in 32 degree temps.  I decided to see how the ceramic heater worked.  It is adequate at 32 degrees. Big smile

We took our 172 to the dealership today.  The brakes did not work correctly while we were in Florida.  No matter how much adjusting my husband did, they still did the jerking thing when we were almost stopped.  We really noticed it when we were going through a town with traffic lights.  Well, after checking the brakes they tell us that there was a light coating of grease (oil?) on the brake drums.  They said that we had a seal leak and they changed it and cleaned the brakes. I still don't think they are working correctly.  We are going to go camping soon and see how they do.  If not fixed, we are going to take them back.  Our dealership is Northside RV in Lexington.  They are very good to work with.  I think we made a good decision.

On another note, I got to go into the T model (not sure of the number).  If I had  not vowed to never have tent material in my life again, I would consider this model.  We looked at a model which had a couch in front of the air bed.  I think the couch slides down to make a bed.

Another RV that we got to see is the MPG.  It is no wonder that Forrest River is said to be suing Heartland.  That camper is a clone of the Pod.  It is longer by 8" and a little taller.  The model we looked at had a little sink in the bath and it had a semblance of a closet.  I truly did not like the flooring and the backs of the couch were wrinkled.  It is some sort of vinyl material.   Would I choose it over a Pod?  Not really.  To me the Pod seems to have a better look inside.

I did ask about the fan in the fridge.  The service manager took the outside cover off and showed me two fans inside the top  part.  I asked him what the manual was talking about when it mentioned a cover for cold weather.  He said he thinks we have it on already.

Sorry so long winded. Big smile
Pepper

We agree with pepperpod about the MPG we looked at it before we bought our 172 pod. Just to ease our minds that we where making the right decision. We drove almost 3 hours to the dealer and where not impressed. It does look almost exactly like the r-pods but the longer you stand in them the more things you find that seem cheaply done. We are extremely happy with our 172. Even though we haven't left the backyard yetLOL.

Well, the "Pepperpod" is back at the hospital (dealership) LOL again.  The brake trouble was not fixed.  I got a call this morning and they are waiting for parts from the manufacturer.  It seems something is warped in the wheel unit and came that way from the factory.  Pardon me but I really do not know much about wheels. Big smile Rick is much more up on that subject.  Wish us luck.  We have a short trip planned for the week of May 14. We are very thankful that we were able to make our trip to Florida and back safely.

arrrrrrr!!!!  I typed a post and lost it.Angry  I just wanted to say that the Pepperpod is back on the road.  We will pick her up tomorrow from the dealership.  They had to replace the braking unit on both wheels.  It seems the left brake did not work at all while we were on our Florida expedition!!  The right brake got so hot that it had to be replaced.  Thank God we were smart enough to travel the interstates to cut down on braking time.  We feel very lucky that we got home safely.

Good to hear Pepperpod is finally ready to travel after it's brake transplant.  I'm amazed you didn't notice it pulling to one side when you braked but I suppose if you braked gently enough it wouldn't pull.
Anyway, glad to hear the problem is solved.  Now on to better times in the camping world.

Sandpiper, we noticed that it tended to rock a little when we stopped at the rest areas or to fuel up.  We spent most of our time on the interstate on the Florida trip.

UPDATE

We picked up our Pod from the dealer and stopped to eat half way home.  Rick checked the brakes to see if they were warm. THEY WERE HOT.  We called the dealer and they told us to come back and let them check it again.  One brake was 50 degrees hotter than the other.  They worked on them again and adjusted them again.   Now the other brake is hotter than the one that was hot yesterday. Cry

Question:  Is my husband just being hyper-vigilant or do others of you check to see if your brakes are getting hot? He checks because a friend of ours was towing a car on a trailer going to Florida and burned up his brakes and wheel. Have you ever experienced hot brakes.

I am at the end of my rope with this.  I think the next step is to contact Forest River.

The only time we've gotten our brakes checked was every time we came down from Pikes Peak (mandatory). They do this for safety reasons because most people tend to ride their brakes. As far as checking the brakes all the time - never had. Ever checked on your breakaway to see if that might be the issue?

Yep, with many miles of pulling trailers (boat, travel, utility, etc. ) I have developed the habit of always checking the temperature of the wheel hub at least once  per travel day, more often than not at every stop.  I've always done this the unscientific way of laying my hand on the wheel hub.  If it is merely warm, everything is good, if it's too hot to touch or nearly so, then it can be breaks (if so equipped) or wheel bearings.   I'd make sure the dealer has made sure the wheel bearings are not an issue also.  Rob

Make sure you have 12 volts to the pod from the battery. If you use the battery cut-off switch make sure you have the key in and check either with a volt meter or use the leds located in the pod. I have already had to replace one switch due to a voltage dropscross the switch. I don't think they are water proof and if you don't have a cover to cover were the red key goes in; water will enter thru this and cause corrison. . I cover mine with a piece of duck tape now when not in use.

GrandPod I use a rubber chair foot cover.

Keep spare on the terminal and the extra key is stored with tape on the inside of the box.

My two cents.

Great idea. At the time I discovered the problem with the switch we were in the middle of a 3 day

OK, I am a little confused (happens often Big smile ).  Does the 12 volt to the pod from the battery deal with my brake problem.  How is it related?

You need the 12vdc battery on the Pod to make the breakaway switch work properly, if it doesn't see the 12vdc it will act like an emergency break to stop the pod. Hopefully someone can explain this in more technical terms.
