Seems like I'm always forgetting to turn off the electric water heater switch when breaking camp. When we plug the pod into shore power to load up the fridge prior to the next trip, the water heater is already on, and of course I never remember this until just after I plug in the shore power. So then I scramble to open the outside access and flip the switch off. Fortunately there's always been enough residual water in the water heater tank that I haven't burned out the element yet, but it was probably only a matter of time. That switch needed to be made harder for me to overlook by moving it inside. I planned to remove the existing 110V switch from its original location and reuse it, but after poking around a bit I decided that was just going to be too much trouble. Looking under the dinette seat, I found extra 110V wire looped up and taped outside the water heater J-box. By simply untaping it and doing some minor rerouting, I was able to come up with quite a bit of extra wire, more than enough to add a switch inline.

The 110V wire junctions have to be contained within a junction box, just like in your house.  A quick trip to Home Depot and $7 got me this: a shallow depth junction box, decorator switch, and switch plate with hidden screws.

Others have suggested replacing the existing water heater gas switch with an ON-OFF-ON type, and using a relay with 12V switching voltage to drive the 110V water heater circuit. This way the existing hole underneath the sink could be used for the switch, the relay would probably fit in the existing J-box on the water heater, and no added holes would have to cut in the cabinetry. That solution would be elegant and probably that's the way it should have been done in the first place. However, with all that extra wire just hanging out there begging to be used, it seemed my method was the easiest, and cheapest way to go. So out came the saw:

This switch is quite low profile, and sticks out less than the furnace and the wooden cabinet trim, making it less likely that it will be bumped and accidentally turned on. The 110V wires are secured to the inside cabinet frame next to the new junction box. Just turn on the original 110V water heater switch located outside and forget it, because now you can control the WH from inside the rPod.

The only thing missing was a pilot lamp of some sort to let you know when the WH was on. Digging through my junk boxes for resistors and LEDs and diodes (oh my) to make a pilot lamp wasn't cutting it, and a few minutes online followed by a call to my local Radio Shack let me know that they had almost nothing of any use in stock, at least for this particular project. The guy at the local electrical supply house suggested the switch below, made by Pass & Seymour, uses the same switchplate as the one I had. A few minutes with Photoshop and I had a label for the lower half. Photo shows pilot lit, water heater on:

Ahhh ... much better. Thanks to all for taking your time to give me suggestions on this project.

Only thing I would suggest is one of the lockout covers to make sure no one bumps it and turns it off/on by accident.

Newbie here - again- It sounds like I need a check off sheet for when I break camp. What should be turned off, left on, attached, stored, etc. Today I just learned how to disconnect my pod from the car hitch- how new can I get. In a few days I get to practice backing it up, learn to put it in my driveway, hook it up and connect everything, adjust the break controller-I am excited but getting overwhelmed as I get ready for my first trip.

Therefore, if anyone has a helpful checkoff sheet, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lookin' good.  An idea, you could drill a hole in the switch plate and add an indicator light to remind you that its on.  Could be as simple as an LED with a properly-sized resistor on the switched side.

Roxy - don't feel bad, we have a one-page packing list (single-spaced, 10 pt type) to remind us of all the things to pack and do, like turn off the home water heater & thermostats, flush toilets, take out the trash - all before we leave.  Years of "whoops, we forgot that" made it complete.  Like coming home to a full kitchen trash can after a week at the beach after cleaning out the fridge... turning off the A/C was already on the list so it was in the 80's inside every day....  Dead

Better to have a list or two than to forget your sunglasses in your other car and realize it when its time to hit the beach.  Yeah, did that too.  Cool

The indicator light is a good idea, that's going to be my next project.

I was looking for a switch with a light in it at Home Depot, but of course they all light up when the switch is off so you can find them in the dark.

If you have any experience with electronics you could use this LED: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062555 which would need approximately a 6 K-ohm, 5- watt (min) resistor, such as this one: http://www.ralphselectronics.com/ProductDetails.aspx?itemnumber=CLA-VPR10F6K&source=googleps
Plus a diode...

You could also use this 120V volt neon indicator (second item down): http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm/subsection/15/category/148

What about using a "glow in the dark" paint that when on it would be lite up?  Really like your idea and I'll have to put that on my "gotta do this" list.  Thanks for sharing.

Dear Roxy,
In google search type "rv checklist",  rv forum and the campingjournal seem to have lists for food, packing, closing house departure and arrivals.

I Don't have one of my own yet, but I plan to cut and paste from theirs.

Good Luck on your travels.
Lee
Still a work in progress, lots of pictures.

Hi Roxy, I also feel overwhelmed at times, I have had mine out once and did the backing up ok, but I was still nervous. It took me a few trys. Everyone tells me it will get better with time.................... I hope they are right. Sometimes I wonder, what am I doing? But then I think about all the fun I am going to have and know it is well worth it. Have fun on your trip. Let us know how it goes. I also need a checkoff sheet, that is a great idea.
